Big, bold and transgressive, this selection of Cindy Sherman’s Historical Portraits are exhibited alongside Tapestry Paintings by David Salle, in the brand new London space from the international Skarstedt.
Draped fabrics and natural materials add layers and depth, accentuating the painterly aspect of the photographs, while her obvious use of prosthetics calls into question art history traditions and accepted gender stereotypes. Women are mothers, pregnant or lactating, men stare cooly in their trappings of a profession at court. As both photographer and model, Sherman plays with traditional roles of creator and muse, and illustrates the performative aspect of gender stereotypes.
Closing tomorrow, 26 November, this is a last chance to see these enormous photographs in a great space. See it while you can.
Cindy Sherman & David Salle: History Portraits & Tapestry Paintings is at Skarstedt, London, from 1st Oct – 26th November 2016, www.skarstedt.com
