Nilbar Güreş, represented by Galerie Tanja Wagner, has been announced as the winner of the De’Longhi Art Projects Artist Award 2018 at this years’ London Art Fair.
The Turkish-born artist is being exhibited in the Fair’s Dialogues section, which this year is dedicated exclusively to female artists. The annual award, which includes a prize of £2,500, is presented to an artist on display within Art Projects, London Art Fair’s section dedicated to innovative contemporary work.
Güreş chooses a performative approach for her work, using photography, collage, drawing and video to place everyday realities into theatrical settings in order to explore cultural identity and codes. Güreş’ works are characterised by a playful and humorous approach that is nonetheless both political and critical, addressing the effects of sexism, violence and gender inequality. Her work also reveals a tension between her Anatolian heritage and other facets of her identity as a feminist queer artist.
Güreş’ work will be on show at London Art Fair until Sunday 21st January. Following this she will have her first solo show at Galerie Tanja Wagner in Berlin, opening on 23rd February 2018.
