Pick of the week – the Neo Naturists at Studio Voltaire
Craft, cooking and nudity served up in a radical subversion of art, beauty, gender and appropriate outdoor wear.
The Neo-Naturists used their bodies as canvas to question the norms of the contemporary art scene and subvert ideas about beauty and gender.
Formed by Jennifer Binnie, Christine Binnie and Wilma Johnson in the 80’s, performances involved nudity with bodies painted and rituals including birthing objects and nude cooking on a Calor-gas stove the fruits of which were then served up to the audience. One performance involved member Grayson Perry and Jennifer Binnie preparing flambéed bananas dressed as Fanny Cradock and her husband Johhnie. With Binnie as Johnnie and Perry as Fanny.
Film, sketchbooks, paintings, artefacts and dialogue have been brought together in this important and fun retrospective of the punk art collective at Studio Voltaire until the end of August. Now extended with extra dates to 4th September.
