Dig deep, there’s one week only left to crowdfund this important documentary about Poly Styrene, the punk icon and singer-songwriter with X-Ray Spex.
Born Marianne Joan Elliott-Said in Kent in 1957, she changed her name to Poly Styrene and formed punk band X-Ray Spex after seeing the Sex Pistols perform at the Pier Pavilion, Hastings in 1976.
The film follows her largely untold story addressing her struggles with misogyny, racism and mental health through unseen footage and archive materials, original interviews and new research. Narrated and produced by her daughter, Celeste Bell, the film revisits pivotal moments and iconic spaces in Poly’s history. Directed by Paul Sng (Sleaford Mods – Invisable Britain) and written by Zoe Howe (Typical Girls? The story of the Slits; Barbed Wire Kisses – The Jesus and Mary Chain).
