Spotlight on… Erika Navas, our pick of START Art Fair.
The sixth edition of START opened this week at Saatchi Gallery, London with a busy first day of over 3,000 guests. START focuses on emerging artists and art scenes, and takes over all three floors of Saatchi Gallery. This year the fair sees works and projects by more than 100 artists, from over 30 countries showing as either solo presentations or within one of the 24 galleries.
Navas was born in Mexico City, moving to Vienna when she was six years old. Always having a love of painting, she says, “As a kid I loved to paint and I also participated in painting competitions. I was very pleased seeing my paintings on the walls of the hallways. During my leisure time I was always doing creative things and was never bored. I was constantly either knitting, sewing or painting.”
“I was always focusing on painting the body. The human body. The right proportions. Later on the perspective. The movement, the fast line. I am fascinated when the previously white canvas is suddenly three-dimensional.”
See Navas’ figurative work at START Art Fair, to 29 September 2019.
