It’s the first in our series of talks! We’ve partnered up with Shoreditch House, London to put together WIA Presents… First up is WIA presents: Taking the Piss. The Secret History of Duchamp’s Urinal. Wednesday 29th March. 7.00pm.
Marcel Duchamp’s ‘the Fountain’ is arguably the most important and influential conceptual art work of the twentieth century. The story of how Duchamp made the original ‘readymade’ is a cornerstone of the twentieth century art history canon. But is it an ‘alternative fact’?
The authorship of ‘the Fountain’ has recently been up for debate. A hidden history suggests this most famous of works was conceived by another: Baroness Elsa Von Freytag-Loringhoven, Dada artist and muse, punk rock incarnate sixty years before her time.
WIA presents the strange story of the greatest work of twentieth century conceptual art, and asks the question that will challenge art history – should authorship of ‘the Fountain’ be changed forever?
