Queen of polka dots and pumpkins, Yayoi Kusama has announced that she is opening a museum to exhibit her works. The first exhibition, titled Creation is a Solitary Pursuit, Love is What Brings You Closer to Art, will feature her large painting series entitled ‘My Eternal Soul’ and will run from from 1 October 2017 to 25 February 2018.
The tall, white, architectural building based in the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, had been commissioned by Kusama, and had remained empty since it’s completion in 2014. It’s purpose was a mystery until the announcement this month the museum was ready to open. Tickets for the inaugural exhibition will be available to book from 28 August.
In a press release, the Yayoi Kusama Foundation said the museum will run two shows a year, and “spread the message of world peace and love that Kusama has called for to the world in her works”.
The ground floor will house the entrance and a gift shop. Levels 2 and 3 are exhibition spaces for Kusama’s works and the 4th floor for Kusama’s immersive installations. The 5th floor will serve as a reading room storing documents and material relating to Kusama and her work as well as an outdoor space.
